India 'A' players in team for Dhaka series

Faisal Shariff | April 02, 2003 16:17 IST

The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday announced the team for the Dhaka tri-nation tournament.

The team will be led by Sourav Ganguly while Virender Sehwag has been appointed vice-captain for the series, which also involves South Africa and Bangladesh.

Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Ashish Nehra have opted out to attend to injuries. Anil Kumble has sought time to attend to some personal matters while Javagal Srinath wants time to rest and recuperate.

V V S Laxman, who led the India 'A' team to the West Indies, and Murali Karthik have been advised rest after sustaining injuries on the tour.

Dinesh Mongia continues to find a place in the squad despite his poor showing in the World Cup. Other than that the selectors have gone with form and Aavishkar Salvi, Gautam Gambhir, Abhijit Kale and Amit Mishra, who toured the West Indies with the India 'A' team, have been rewarded for their good showing and given an opportunity to display their talents in the international arena.

The team will leave for Dhaka on April 9 and play its first match on April 11.

BCCI honorary secretary S K Nair said the board has decided to clear all pending dues of the cricketers even though sponsors are yet to cough up the money.

President A P J Abdul Kalam will felicitate the World Cup team on April 7 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, he informed.
