Hameed cracks debut century for Pakistan

August 21, 2003 19:43 IST

Replying to Bangladesh's first innings total of 288, Pakistan were 301 for five at close on the second day of the first Test at the National Stadium on Thursday.

Yasir Hameed smashed 170 runs in his maiden Test but veteran Inzamam-ul-Haq fell for a duck, at Karachi's National Stadium on Thursday.

Hameed became the ninth Pakistani player to score a debut hundred, the 25-year-old executing a series of wristy and full-blooded shots on both sides of the wicket.

But Inzamam faced just five balls before being caught by Rajin Saleh at mid-wicket off Tapash Baisya.

It was a big let down for the 33-year-old veteran of 85 Tests who was recalled after being ignored since the World Cup.

Pakistan also lost Taufiq Umar after lunch when he came down the wicket and hit a stinging drive off Rafique, only to be caught at point by Javed Omar to leave Pakistan on 102-2.

Umar had put on 97 runs with Hameed for the second wicket, making 38 runs.

Hameed, however, continued his dominant form against the Bangladeshi bowlers, reaching his 50 in 80 balls and his hundred 66 balls later, sweeping Alok Kapali fine for a boundary.

He hit 18 fours in his century, reaching his half century in style by driving pacer Mashrafe Mortaza for three fours in one over through point, cover and mid-off.

Hammed was finally dismissed on 170 caught by Mohammad Rafique off Mashrafe Mortaza.

Mortaza had earlier removed debutant opener Mohammad Hafeez for two.
