Steve Waugh smashed an unbeaten century to equal two of cricket's greatest batting landmarks and help Australia push for a quick kill in the first Test against Bangladesh.

Waugh's unbeaten 100 saw him join South African Gary Kirsten as the only player to score hundreds against all of their nine test-playing opponents.

He also joined India's Sachin Tendulkar in second place on the all-time list of century-makers with 31 Test hundreds -- with only Sunil Gavaskar's 34 ahead of them.

As soon as Waugh completed his hundred, he immediately declared Australia's first innings closed at 407 for seven, 310 in front of Bangladesh, who managed a paltry 97 in their first innings and face the prospect of an innings defeat inside three days.

Darren Lehmann also scored a century and opener Justin Langer made a patient 71 as Australia's batsmen piled on the runs.

Lehmann made 110 and Langer 71 after sharing a third wicket partnership of 141 runs that quickly put Australia in control of a match that has lived up to its pre-game predictions of a one-sided contest.

Adam Gilchrist also belted a quickfire 43 but Martin Love missed out when he was bowled for a duck by Mashrafe Mortaza, who was the most successful of the Bangladeshi bowlers with three wickets.

The home team began the day at 121-2 but lost one wicket before lunch when Langer, who had resumed on 40, misjudged an attempted pull off Alok Kapali and was trapped leg before wicket.

Lehmann, who had started the day on 51, reached his second test hundred and his first on home soil just after lunch.

His century took 223 balls and 266 minutes but he was eventually dismissed with the total on 243 when Javed Omar held a difficult catch in the outfield.

Waugh brought up his 31st Test century in typically daring circumstances in 177 minutes off 133 balls.

The Australian captain smashed 10 boundaries and a six during his innings but needed to scramble through for a quick two runs off Tapash Baisya to add another chapter to his astonishing career.
