Stewart ponders life after England

September 02, 2003 21:23 IST

Alec Stewart will make a decision over his future after playing his last Test for England against South Africa this week.

Former England skipper Stewart told a news conference at The Oval on Tuesday: "Over the next six weeks I'll be deciding exactly what I'm going to do.

"I have always set my store on playing at the highest level for England. I will have to ask myself why I'm playing after that. I have got a lot of thinking to do."

The 40-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, who retired from one-day cricket after this year's World Cup, said he would be available for selection for Surrey's last championship match of the season.

He will then consider a number of job offers. Asked if he would continue within cricket, he said: "Within sport is probably a fair answer.

"When you lot are all in Dhaka (England tour Bangladesh in October) I'll be in Rome, watching Chelsea play Lazio." He is a fervent supporter of the premier league club.

Stewart will play his 133rd Test this week. He has scored 8,425 runs at an average of 39.55. Only Graham Gooch has scored more Test runs for England.
