India win by innings and 83 runs

Deepti Patwardhan | December 20, 2004 10:16 IST

India finished the Bangladesh innings in four balls to win the Chittagong Test by an innings and 83 runs on Monday.

Bangladesh, resuming on 118 for nine on the fourth morning at the M A Aziz Stadium, were all out for 124.

The visitors completed a series sweep of 2-0 to hand Bangladesh their twentieth, and fifth successive, innings defeat.

In the first innings Bangladesh scored 333, thanks to an unbeaten 158 by Mohammad Ashraful. But they could not avoid the follow on, as India had piled on 540 runs earlier.

In the second innings the hosts offered no resistance to the Indian bowlers.

Harbhajan Singh came out with the ball in the morning and quickly finished off the job. Talha Jubair, who used the long handle to good effect in the fading light on Sunday evening, hit the second ball of the morning over long on for a six. He tried to repeat the shot but holed out in the deep to Irfan Pathan.

Ashraful was adjudged the man of the match.

Pathan collected his first man of the series trophy for his three five-wicket hauls.

The series, expectedly, helped the Indian regain their form. After inconsistent performances against Australia and South Africa at home, they heaped a number of records against the minnows.

The two teams will now compete in a one-day series, with the first match on December 23.
