Australia donate winnings to help tsunami victims

Greg Buckle | December 29, 2004 18:37 IST

Australia have donated their prize money for winning the second Test against Pakistan to a fund for the tsunami victims in Asia, captain Ricky Ponting said on Wednesday.

Their $13,000 cheque for victory in Melbourne will now be sent to the disaster fund while Cricket Australia (CA) want to arrange a charity match against Pakistan to raise more money.

They have also asked other cricket nations to help raise funds for the thousands affected by the tsunami, including those in the cricket-mad nations of Sri Lanka and India.

Spokesman Peter Young said CA were speaking with the International Cricket Council (ICC) about scheduling a day in the next few weeks where fundraising matches around the cricketing world could be played.

An ICC spokesman said the governing body would sanction extra matches being organised.

"We are certainly working with boards to co-ordinate efforts to help two of our member countries (Sri Lanka and India)," the spokesman said.

"What boards do ... is at their discretion and there is nothing to stop them playing additional games. South Africa may be looking to do something as well."

After his side's nine-wicket defeat in Melbourne, Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer said cricket was not important at the moment.

"It's a tragedy that puts everything into perspective as far as cricket goes. We understand that and it's very sad for all the people who have suffered and are still suffering," he said.

"I think the two teams have signed shirts and the shirts are being auctioned somewhere to help them."
