Dubious distinction for India

Rajneesh Gupta | March 16, 2004 21:21 IST

India achieved a dubious distinction by conceding 329 runs in the second One-Day International in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

It was the third consecutive time in three matches that a total of 300-plus was posted against India. The sequence started with the second final of VB tri-series in Sydney when Australia made a mammoth 359 for two in the stipulated 50 overs. Pakistan then made 344 for 8 in the first one-day international in Karachi on Saturday and followed it up with 329 for six in Rawalpindi today.

There are several instances of a side conceding 300-plus runs in two successive matches. But only on two previous occasions in the history of one-day internationals, 300-plus totals have been made against a side in three consecutive matches.

India now join Zimbabwe and Namibia in this exclusive club. Zimbabwe were the first side to do so in the series against Pakistan at home soil in 2002-03, while Namibia were at the receiving end during the 2002-03 World Cup.
