Ajit Jogi still in a daze, evasive on Judeo episode

December 04, 2003 19:19 IST

Conceding defeat in Chhattisgarh where the BJP has crossed the half-way mark, Chief Minister Ajit Jogi on Thursday appeared to be in a daze and unable to pinpoint the reasons for the party's defeat.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Raipur after it became clear that his party would not be able to form a government in the tribal state, Jogi said, "The real reasons for the defeat will be known once we analyse the result."

The BJP had crossed the half-way mark when the results of 88 seats were declared. The Bahujan Samaj party has won two seats and the NCP one.

Jogi attributed the poll reverses to the drubbing the Congress suffered in Naxal-infested areas were it did not win even one of the 20 seats at stake. The party performed well in the urban parts of the state, where the literacy rate is high.

On the bribery allegations against BJP leader Dilip Singh Judeo, he said, "Everybody saw Judeo taking money on the tape and it must have had some effect."

He would accept the poll verdict "with all humility" and assured that the party would play the role of a "constructive opposition."

Asked whether he fears any vindictive action from a BJP government, Jogi said, "I have not done anything wrong and am not afraid of anything. My life is like an open book."
