Rama Pilot arrived in Jhalrapatan on November 14, the day her name was filed as the Congress candidate, and began campaigning immediately. She is literally combing the constituency, going across to villages where no roads exist and where only jeeps can reach.

She reaches one such village, Khokhanda, where she addresses a rally in the temple courtyard. This village, which houses some 800 odd inhabitants, is difficult to reach across rough terrain. Despite promises by politicians over the decades, the villagers say no road has come their way.

Not surprisingly the primary -- perhaps only -- demand is for a road to the highway. This village has a primary school and health centre, it has water and is prosperous, producing mostly coriander (dhania), besides maize, wheat, and jowar.
