I believe in the voice of people: Sidhu

The Bharatiya Janata Party will never be short of slogans anymore, not at least in Amritsar.

Navjot Singh SidhuWith the party deciding to nominate former Test cricketer and commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu from Amritsar, the electorate in Amritsar is in for some snappy one-liners.

"I am committed unconditionally to the BJP. And I will work solely for the upliftment of the downtrodden in my constituency. Giving happiness to mankind will be my sincere endeavour," Sidhu told rediff.com in Islamabad.

"Truth will be the essence of my campaign. Truth is my religion and I will follow it with a single-minded focus. I will do justice to the nation and my constituency. If I am elected, I will not go back to Patiala, but stay in Amritsar and work for my people there."

Kicking off his election trail from Islamabad itself, Sidhu said the way India is surging ahead in the global race is the main reason why he is with the BJP.

"In [Atal Bihari] Vajpayee we have a great leader who can take us ahead. In most cases the electorate vote against a government, but in this case the people will vote for a government in power. There will be no anti-incumbency factor," Sidhu said.

He, however, refused to reveal where he would generate the funds from for his campaign. "Reputation, my friend, and not funds will win me the election. My work will matter. Men who can change the course of history matter. I will leave it to the people of Amritsar to judge and vote for me. I believe in the voice of people, because it is the voice of god."

The man who once deserted the Indian team mid-way through a foreign tour spoke about the team effort of the BJP and added he would be soon joining ranks with the most cohesive team in Indian politics.

Sidhu said he would continue with his media-related work.
