Opposition stalls Parliament again over Jharkhand

March 03, 2005 14:12 IST

The Opposition, angered by Jharkhand Governor Syed Sibtey Razi's decision to install Congress-Jharkhand Mukti Morcha government in the state, stalled the proceedings in Parliament for the second day on Thursday.

Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day as Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance members stormed the well displaying a newspaper carrying the headline 'Murder in Raj Bhavan'.

They shouted slogans like 'dictatorship in democracy will not be tolerated'.

The House was finally adjourned for the day by Devendra Prasad Yadav, who was in the Chair.

Earlier, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee had asked members not to display newspapers and return to their seats.

BJP leader V K Malhotra said it was the 'blackest day in the history of Indian democracy' as the governor had sworn in 'a person who had murder cases against him in that very state'.

The Speaker asked Malhotra not to talk about the governor, as it was against the rules of Parliament. But as Malhotra continued his attack charging the Congress leadership with 'murdering democracy', Chatterjee adjourned the House for half-an-hour.

In the Rajya Sabha, BJP leaders Venkaiah Naidu, Pramod Mahajan, Sushma Swaraj, Murli Manohar Joshi and Rajnath Singh were on their feet protesting the installation of the Shibu Soren government. Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh also raised the issue.

Sensing the mood, Chairman Shekhawat adjourned the House till 1400 hours, barely five minutes after it met in the morning.
