The Indian Banks' Association today apprised Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha on the status of negotiations with the bank unions over employees' wage hikes.

''We are very optimistic of hammering out a solution soon and will take a decision after reaching Bombay. But we have not decided when to meet the trade unions,'' association chief executive and secretary M N Dandekar (click for an interview with him) told newspersons in New Delhi after a 45-minute long meeting with Sinha.

Asked if the finance minister has stated his position over the talks, Dandekar said the IBA intends to keep the wage negotiations bipartite, as is going on since 1966, and ''there will be no intervention from the government.''

''We have not come here for instructions... The government also has not asked us to do this or that,'' he asserted.

The delegation included IBA chairman Panneer Sylvan, Harbhajan Singh of Allahabad Bank, Dalbir Singh of Oriental Bank of Commerce, K S Krishnamurthy of Syndicate Bank besides Dandekar.
