CDMA has won: Mukesh Ambani

April 14, 2003 19:25 IST

Amid the ongoing controversy over limited mobility service by basic telecom operators, Reliance Industries asserted on Monday that it was keeping its telecom services in conformity with the licence conditions and said it wanted fair returns and was not in favour of predatory pricing.

"CDMA (based WLL service) has won...CDMA-GSM (cellular) war is over," Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of RIL said in an interview on NDTV's news channel 24X7, which was launched on Monday.

On predatory pricing issue, Ambani said, "If we have capital and operational efficiency because of execution skills or right timing in the market, we would like to pass it on to the customers."

There was no predatory pricing, Ambani said, adding Reliance wanted to earn fair return.

On the contentious issue of roaming, Ambani said, "Within the licence Reliance has got -- the fixed service provider mobility licence  -- mobility is allowed to us, we, however, have (other) restrictions on our licence."

"We are not even asking for roaming. We will make sure whatever our customers require, is done under our infrastructure and strictly according to our licence conditions," Ambani pointed out.

Reliance Infocomm has licence for providing basic telecom services including WLL based limited mobility operations in 17 states, which have nearly 673 Short Distance Charging Areas. One SDCA is equivalent to a local call area.

The company, which is focussing mainly on WLL services, recently postponed its commercial service launch to May 1.
