70 lakh jobs created, says Vajpayee
February 26, 2003 15:41 IST
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday told the Lok Sabha that his government has fulfilled its commitment on the job generation front partially by creating as many as 70 lakh (7 million) jobs even as the agitated opposition obstructed the Question Hour to flay his regime on privatisation of profit making public sector units.
The Opposition, including Congress and the Left parties, had tabled as many as eleven notices for adjournment and seven for suspension of Question Hour to raise the issue of faulty economic policies of the Vajpayee government leading to massive unemployment.
The notices were timed to highlight the march to Parliament by the Central Trade unions criticising the government's economic policies.
Responding to the Opposition leader's criticism, Vajpayee said his government has created as many as 70 lakh (7 million) jobs out of one crore (10 million) promised by him. Admitting that the problem is serious, the prime minister agreed to hold consultations with the Opposition leaders.
He said the unemployment problem cannot be resolved by making speeches in the Parliament. ''We were also making speeches while our party was in the Opposition,'' Vajpayee said. UNI
