The first hijacking occurred when in 1971 an Indian Airlines flight to Srinagar was forced to fly to Islamabad by a former associate of Jammu Kashmir Liberating Front chief Amanullah Khan. In 1993, the Indian Airlines Bangalore-Madras A-320 Airbus with 56 passengers, 7 crew was hijacked. The hijacker wanted Marathwada University to be renamed after Dr B R Ambedkar. The last and the most recent incident was the hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to New Delhi. The flight was taken to Afghanistan and four released had to be released to free the passengers.

In the first phase the airport would cater to 4 million passengers including one million international passengers and handle about 100,000 tonnes of cargo a year. The existing Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd airport in Bangalore caters to 2.5 million passengers and 25,000 tonnes of cargo. Once the private airport is ready, the existing airport would be used by HAL for defense purposes.
