Suspected SARS case in Hyderabad

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad | April 08, 2003 23:11 IST

A passenger, who arrived in Hyderabad on Tuesday evening, was admitted to a hospital after he was suspected to be suffering from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, the flu-like disease that has killed more than 100 people worldwide.

David Raphael Anthony, 48, was coming from Australia via Singapore.

The airlines officials had found that he was having high fever, cough and cold, which are the usual symptoms of SARS.

On arrival at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad at around 1900 IST, the medical team at the SARS screening cell examined the passenger and shifted him to the AP Hospital for Chest Diseases.

"We have admitted and isolated the patient. The patient's condition is stable," the duty medical officer at the hospital told rediff.com on Tuesday night.

The hospital has a five-bed ward for treating SARS cases.

Anthony, a software profession, hails from Kottayam, Kerala, and stays in Australia, the hospital official said.
