Akshardham heroes yet to get compensation
April 23, 2003 16:26 IST
Gujarat police officials, who braved the two heavily armed terrorists during the Akshardham temple attack in Gandhinagar on September 24 last year, are yet to officially hear about the rewards or compensation announced by the state government.
But the home ministry said the orders for the same are with the DG office.
Modi had announced that police and security personnel injured in line of duty would get compensation of up to Rs 50,000 separately.
Twenty-three security personnel were injured, some of them seriously, in the crossfire with terrorists. Two state commandos and one National Security Guard personnel succumbed to bullets, while one, Kirti Chakra awardee Surjan Singh, is still comatose.
District Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad (rural), R B Brahmbhatt, who was posted as
DSP Gandhinagar during the militant attack was in direct line of fire of the terrorists and received bullet injuries on his forearm, also falls in the top category of rewardees.
"I am yet to hear anything officially. There was a mention of separate amount as injury compensation but am not sure if this amount is inclusive of that or not", Brahmbhatt said.
Meanwhile, Home Secretary K Nityanandam said orders for handing over the reward to concerned officials have been passed to DG office and the rest would follow from there.
"Those injured in the incident would also get a separate injury compensation and as per my knowledge some have already got it by now and those pending would also be given soon," Nityanandam said.
