Jamali calls Vajpayee, invites
him to Pakistan for talks

Josy Joseph in New Delhi | April 28, 2003 21:41 IST

Pakistan Premier Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali on Monday night invited Atal Bihari Vajpayee to visit Pakistan and expressed his willingness to visit India as part of efforts to improve bilateral ties, Pakistani spokesperson Aziz Khan told Aaj Tak television channel.

During the ten-minute conversation, the two leaders agreed to consider a set of measures to break the ice.

Jamali conveyed his appreciation of the Indian premier's recent statements on Indo-Pak dialogue in Srinagar as well as in Parliament, and said it had improved the atmosphere and increased the chances of an Indo-Pak dialogue.

He suggested the two countries could make a start by improving diplomatic relations and resuming sporting links.

In turn, Vajpayee pointed to the importance of people-to-people contact and stressed on economic cooperation and cultural exchanges.

The PMO confirmed the call but said the Ministry of External Affairs would reveal the details on Tuesday.
