Uddhav Thackeray asks state govt to quit

August 25, 2003 20:59 IST

Terming the twin blasts in Mumbai as 'shameful', Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday demanded the resignation of the Democratic Front coalition government in Maharashtra for its 'failure to protect the people in the state'.

Supporting BJP's demand for President's rule in the state, he said the state government had no moral right to continue in power if it could not protect the people.

"How long are we going to tolerate this? Even after all this has happened, the chief minister is appealing to the people to observe restraint," he said.

When asked for his reaction, he asked, "What can I say on this? If I say something, I am accused of making a political issue out of it. But just how long we are going to tolerate these sort of things?"

Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, in a statement issued has also demanded the resignation of the government for 'failing' to protect the people.
