People out in droves for blood donation

Vijay Singh in Mumbai | August 25, 2003 21:31 IST

When a crisis strikes Mumbai, its residents display a never-say-die attitude. Down, but never out seems to be the motto of the Mumbaikars.

An example of this attitude can be found at the Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital in Dhobi Talao, south Mumbai, where more than 200 people have submitted forms to donate blood.

M T Patil, medical social worker at the hospital, admitted to rediff.com that the hospital administration has been finding it difficult coping with the rush of good samaritans.

"We have limited storage capacity for blood. Blood has to be used within a period of 35 day, else it gets spoiled. So for we are taking only limited blood donation. We have taken down phone numbers and addresses of those we are not able to accommodate right now," he said.

The hospital, he added, has 46 bottles of blood from different blood groups. He said the hospital is also in touch with others in case an emergency crops up. Patil said till now doctors have asked for three bottle of blood, which had been given.

Patil said 30 bottles of blood have been collected from donors.
