Jamali differs with Musharraf on UN resolutions

Pakistan Prime Minster Mir Zafarullah Jamali on Sunday asserted that United Nations resolutions calling for a plebiscite remained the basis of finding a solution to the vexed Kashmir issue, directly contradicting President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

The latter had said that Pakistan was ready to set aside its demand for settlement of the Kashmir issue through UN resolutions and favoured a flexible approach on both sides, prompting widespread criticism in his country but appreciation from the United States.

"The basis of the whole solution lies in the UN resolution. That has to be kept in mind. You cannot overlook it," Jamali told NDTV.

Asked what Musharraf meant when he said the demand for resolutions could be set aside, Jamali said, "When President Musharraf said 'set aside', he probably meant... yes, they have to follow.

"The UN resolutions will be carried through. They have to come up."

Abandoning the UN resolutions, he warned, would make things 'difficult' between India and Pakistan.
