Driver's mistake may have caused mishap: Minister

July 02, 2003 14:02 IST

Railway Minister Nitish Kumar has announced an inquiry by the commissioner, railway safety (south), into Wednesday morning's train accident in Warangal, which has so far claimed 12 lives.

Minister of State for Railways Bandaru Dattatreya, the Railway Board chairman and the general manager of South Central Railway have rushed to the accident site, Kumar said.

Asked about the ex-gratia payment to the victims' families, Kumar said it would be announced by Dattatreya in Warangal.

Two bogies of Hyderabad-bound Golconda Express derailed and fell from a rail over-bridge, hitting two autorikshaws
near Warangal town early on Wednesday morning.

A mistake made by the driver in reading the signals, the minister said, prima facie look likes the main cause of the mishap. When his attention was drawn to reports that break failure may have caused the mishap, he said: "I do not have more details than this."
