BJP wants double-member LS seats

July 19, 2003 16:46 IST

Under tremendous pressure from its women members, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday favoured reservation of 33 per cent Lok Sabha constituencies as double-member seats.

"The BJP is now of the considered view that 33 per cent of the seats in the Lok Sabha must be made double-member constituencies. One of the two seats mandatorily reserved for women. These constituencies will change on a rotational basis," the party said in a resolution adopted unanimously on the second day its three-day national executive meeting in Raipur.

Pointing out that the double-member seats would increase the total number of members in the Lok Sabha by 181, the resolution said the same formula could be adopted in state legislatures too.

The party urged the National Democratic Alliance to introduce a suitable constitutional amendment bill in Parliament at the earliest in this connection.

Earlier, in its draft resolution, the party had suggested that 20 per cent of the seats in the Lok Sabha be reserved as double-member constitutencies, but this was opposed by the party's women leaders, including Uma Bharati and Sushma Swaraj.
