Muslim Law Board not keen on Uniform Civil Code

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow | July 24, 2003 15:18 IST

Minutes after the Supreme Court observation about a Uniform Civil Code filtering out, two leaders of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board were closeted in a meeting to discuss the development.

In Lucknow, Board Senior Vice-President Maulana Kalbe Sadiq rushed to meet its President Maulana Rabe Hasan Nadwi.

After an hour-long meeting, Maulana Nadwi told rediff.com, "It appears rather illogical that anyone should interfere with the personal law of various communities."

"Most personal laws deal with subjects like marriage, succession or divorce, and it would be appropriate to leave them alone."

"As for criminal law, it is the same for all anyway."

Sadiq, a prominent leader of the Shia community, said, "The idea of a Uniform Civil Code is a direct infringement on the Shariat that comes from God Almighty," Sadiq told rediff.com after the meeting.

"The Board may convene a meeting of its executive to discuss this issue following which we may thrash out a strategy to oppose any such move (to introduce a Uniform Civil Code)," he said.
