LS to discuss Uniform Civil Code

July 25, 2003 22:20 IST

Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi on Friday agreed to the opposition's demand for a discussion on the Supreme Court's recent recommendation to introduce the Uniform Civil Code.

The speaker, responding to Shiv Sena MP Suresh Jadhav's plea during Zero Hour, said the matter could be taken up at next week's Business Advisory Committee meeting.

Jadhav urged the government to bring a legislation on the subject as soon as possible.

Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Singh suggested the matter be discussed under Rule 184, which entails voting.

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government is unlikely to agree to it, as many of its allies are opposed to the Uniform Civil Code.

The code is one of the issues on the BJP's agenda, along with the demand for a Ram temple in Ayodhya and the repeal of Article 370.

But these issues have been left out of the National Democratic Alliance's Agenda for Governance.

Earlier this week, the apex court had expressed anguish over the government's failure to enact the common civil code to end discrimination between various religious communities in the areas of marriage, succession and property.
