Muslim delegation to visit Pakistan

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi | June 12, 2003 00:43 IST

A four-member Muslim delegation led by Maulana Mehmood Madani of the Jamait Ulema-e-Hind on Wednesday earned Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's approval to take a peace delegation to Pakistan.

"Since there is no war between our two countries, we thought why not enhance our mutual goodwill. The prime minister agreed with our suggestion for taking a peace delegation to Pakistan," Madani told reporters outside Vajpayee's Race Course Road residence after an hour-long meeting.

The others in the delegation include Hakim Anis-ul Rahman, Niyaz Ahmed Farooqui and Maulana Abdul Hamid Naomani.

"The people-to-people relations between India and Pakistan are excellent. The prime minister also agreed with our suggestion that a like-minded delegation from Pakistan should also be invited to visit India," Madani said.

He said peace among the developing countries was important and added that an Indian delegation is also scheduled to visit Pakistan. The date of the Indian delegation's visit will be fixed soon, he said

Noted Muslim scholar Asad Madani, he added, will lead the Indian delegation.

Apart from Muslims, the delegation will have one of the Shankaracharyas and the Jathedar of the Akal Takht.
