Suresh Oberoi booked in assault case

June 26, 2003 21:37 IST

The Mumbai Police on Thursday booked Suresh Oberoi, actor and father of Vivek Oberoi, on charges of slapping a labourer following a brawl over construction work at his residence in the city.

The actor denied the charges and termed it as 'false and baseless'.

"I have been in and out of Mumbai in the past few days and I do not even remember being in town during the day of the incident. Both me and my actor son Vivek have been busy with our professional work and have not interacted with labourers," he said.

The complaint, filed by civil contractor Sanjay Arora, alleged that Suresh had allegedly slapped one of his labourers, Kunni, on June 24.

According to the contractor, Suresh had instructed the labourer to pick up a sack of sand. When the labourer, who apparently did not hear the instruction, failed to carry out the order, the actor struck him on the face.

The police have registered a non-cognizable offence under section 323 IPC (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 IPC (criminal intimidation) against the actor.
