BJP chief's guard threatens to shoot scribes
May 23, 2003 04:27 IST
A security guard posted outside Bharatiya Janata Party president M Venkaiah Naidu's house in Delhi on Thursday night whipped out a revolver and threatened to shoot journalists who wanted to meet him.
The incident occurred around 2115 hours IST when journalists rushed to Naidu's residence after failing to get any comments from the leaders who attended the meeting called by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to discuss the Union Cabinet reshuffle slated for Saturday.
As the journalists asked the guards posted at the gate of Naidu's residence to inform him that they wanted to meet him, one of the guards in plainclothes whipped out his service revolver and threatened to shoot the journalists if they did not go back.
When the journalists asked him to be polite, the guard said he did not care for them. A minor scuffle broke out when the guard pushed back journalists, including those from the electronic media.
However, when Naidu sent instructions for allowing the mediapersons in, the journalists complained to him about the behaviour of the guard, showed him the footage taken by the camera teams and demanded action against the guard.
Naidu described the incident as 'very serious' and assured the protesting journalists that he would lodge a complaint with the Delhi Police commissioner against the guard and demand an inquiry against him.
Naidu apologised to the journalists for the incident.
