Pak militant camps to be closed by May 31: Report

May 30, 2003 15:18 IST

The Pakistan government is reported to have set May 31 as the deadline for militant groups operating from Pakistan occupied Kashmir to wind up their camps.

But the militant outfits have vowed to resist any crackdown against them.

Though there is no official word from the Pakistan government on the deadline, highly placed sources in the ruling Muslim Conference, which heads the government in PoK, said the Pakistan government was 'firm' in its resolve not to allow militant groups like the Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad to operate.

A report in Pakistan news agency SANA said the crackdown was aimed at preparing the ground for the forthcoming India-Pakistan peace talks.

India, along with the US, has been insisting that Pakistan close all militant camps and destroy the infrastructure before New Delhi and Islamabad begin talks to normalise relations, as well as to resolve differences on various outstanding issues, including Kashmir.
