The Hindu to send report to Centre

November 09, 2003 20:17 IST

The Hindu will send a detailed report on the police entry into its office in Chennai as well as interception of their car in Bangalore on Saturday night to the Union home ministry, the editor-in-chief N Ram said in Chennai on Sunday.

Ram told reporters on the sidelines of the fast undertaken by journalists in Chennai to condemn the Tamil Nadu assembly's decision ordering the arrest of six journalists, including the editors of The Hindu and Murasoli for 'breach of privilege', that Union Minister of State for Home I D Swami wanted a report on the incidents.

Five persons, allegedly Tamil Nadu policemen, intercepted the car carrying Ram and his brother N Murali, the joint managing director of The Hindu, in Bangalore on Saturday night. The persons mistook Murali for The Hindu's editor N Ravi.

Ram said they had filed a complaint in Bangalore. The police had picked up five persons but he was not sure if they were the persons who intercepted the car. He thanked the Karnataka government for the prompt action.

Various leaders, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, Lok Jan Shakthi leader Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Ravi Shankar Prasad have contacted him and expressed solidarity, Ram said.
