ULFA asks Hindi-speaking people to leave Assam

November 15, 2003 13:55 IST

Retaliating against the recent attack on Assamese people travelling through Bihar, the United Liberation Front of Asom on Saturday asked all Hindi-speaking people to "leave Assam immediately."

Several Assamese passengers were assaulted in the past few days by students at Katihar, Jamalpur and Kishangunj stations in Bihar for allegedly preventing Bihari students from appearing for a railway recruitment test at Maligaon in Assam on November 9.

ULFA's self-styled commander-in-chief, Paresh Baruah, in a statement warned that the outfit is planning retaliation for the attack.

The All Assam Students Union has given a call for a 24-hour statewide bandh on November 17.

Another militant outfit, the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, has also condemned the attacks.

In a joint statement in Guwahati, the ULFA and the NDFB warned of consequences that would have "far reaching repercussions" throughout the region if innocent people were continued to be attacked in Bihar.

Heavy security arrangements have been made in the state.
