Good news for stamp duty payers

Vijay Singh in Mumbai | October 29, 2003 00:40 IST

The Maharashtra government has at last decided to accept payment of stamp duty in the form of demand drafts, pay orders or challans.

This decision will come as a relief to people who so far had to carry large sums, sometimes amounting to lakhs of rupees, to pay duty at the government's stamp offices.

The insistence on cash was a problem for the government as well, as carrying it to the treasury was a task fraught with risk.

While transferring the cash from registration office to bank there were always the possibility of being robbed.

This decision will help the government to handle public money safely.
