The US statement that the nuclear deal with India would be scrapped if New Delhi conducted any nuclear test created a furore in Parliament leading to adjournment of both the Houses soon after they met for the day.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 1130 hours, then again till 1400 hours and the Rajya Sabha till noon, then again for the day.

It was trouble from the word go in both the Houses with Bharatiya Janata Party members in the Rajya Sabha storming the well while in the Lok Sabha, the Opposition National Democratic Alliance and the United National Progressive Alliance were joined by the Left parties in raising the issue.

In the Lok Sabha, Telugu Desam Party leader K Yerrannaidu said the prime minister should come to the House and explain the situation to the nation.

Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Basudeb Acharia along with party colleagues was seen vociferously raising the issue. BJP deputy leader V K Malhotra too was on his toes.

Speaker Somnath Chatterjee did not allow suspension of Question Hour saying the members could raise the matter during Zero Hour.

The speaker informed Malhotra that his motion was under consideration, but did not specify on which issue he had given the motion.

Chatterjee decried the behaviour of members observing they were not allowing the House to run.

As soon as the Rajya Sabha met for the day, NDA members were on their feet demanding an apology from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] saying he has "misled" the House.

Chairman Hamid Ansari repeatedly called for taking up listed questions even as BJP members including Sushma Swaraj, Murli Manohar Joshi and Arun Shourie kept making their points.

Later, the BJP members trooped into the well. The chairman pleaded with them to go back to their seats and termed their behaviour as disgraceful.

Dr Singh was present in the House. The Left party members maintained silence all through.

As the uproar continued, Ansari adjourned the House till noon, then later for the day.

When the Lok Sabha reassembled at 1130 hours, the uproar continued.

At this stage, an upset Speaker told the agitating members, "Please get rid of me."

"You cannot hold the House to ransom. You are not the only ones who are concerned about the country. I am also concerned," he said observing this looked like a "deliberate disruption."

Malhotra insisted on knowing the fate of his privilege motion and wanted the chair to inform the House about its subject.

Malhotra also wondered why the prime minister was not coming to the House.

As the uproar continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 1400 hours.
