An army officer was arrested on Tuesday night on the charge of abetting the murder of his wife, also an armed forces officer, who was found hanging in their house in Jammu last year.

Captain Chaitanya was arrested for abetment to murder of his 26-year-old wife Capt Megha Razdan and cruelty under Section 306 and 389-A Ranbir Penal Code (as applicable to Jammu and Kashmir [Images] under Article 370) and would be produced in a court on Wednesday, police sources told PTI in Jammu.

Police had conducted brain mapping and narco-analysis on Capt Chaitanya three months ago in Bangalore, they said.

Megha's death had initially sparked a controversy after a purported suicide note said she was committing suicide as she was harassed by her seniors in the army.

The note also said she was unhappy with her life and wanted to leave the army, but circumstances prevented her from doing so as her family could not pay off the money incurred on her during army training.

Chaitanya had allegedly tried to escape investigation by chopping off his tongue and fabricated the circumstances by enacting a drama of kidnapping, they said.

Sources said the police had taken into account all evidence, circumstantial facts in the death of Megha and the computer-print out and un-signed suicide note do not hold any value to call it a suicide.

The note was recovered from her room.
