Khoo-Vakharia win doubles crown

September 05, 2003 20:26 IST

Chin-Bee Khoo of Malaysia defeated Megha Vakharia in the singles semi-finals and then combined with the Indian to clinch the doubles title at the $10,000 ITF Futures women's tennis tournament in Delhi on Friday.

Chin-Bee and Megha defeated Sheethal Goutham and Shruti Dhawan 6-1, 6-2 in the doubles final at the DLTA Complex in Delhi to claim their third doubles title in a month.

The pair had earlier won back-to-back titles at Lagos and Nigeria last month.

But Megha had to contend with the disappointment of losing out on the singles title as she succumbed to the experience and wily tactics of her Malaysian partner and lost 6-4, 5-7, 5-7 in the singles semi-final.

After a three-hour battle, a singles crown proved elusive for Megha, who had reached three finals this year.

Incidentally, she had lost to the second seed Chin-Bee in the final in Nigeria a few weeks ago.

Chin-Bee will square up against top seed Suchanan Viratprasert of Thailand in the final on Saturday.

Suchanan defeated Samrita Sekar 6-2, 6-1 in the other semi-final, thereby ensuring that Saturday evening will be a non-Indian affair.

For Samrita, this was her best performance after reaching the quarter-finals in Colombo two weeks ago. Her performance becomes all the more creditable considering she beat established players like Rushmi Chakravarthi and Sai Jayalakshmi in the earlier rounds.
