An American soldier is being questioned about a grenade attack on American troops at a Kuwaiti base early on Sunday, that killed one soldier and wounded 13, six of them seriously.

The US army said the 101st Airborne Division's Camp Pennsylvania was attacked by 'one or more unknown assailants.'

A British journalist told CNN that an American soldier has been detained in this connection. The American army has restricted journalists from reporting the incident.

However, later in the day, MSNBC identified the soldier as Sergeant Asan Akbar from an engineering unit attached to the 101st Airborne Division, which was preparing to move into Iraq to join the invasion when the attack took place.

The Chicago Tribune quoted US army spokesman Max Blumenfeld as speculating 'that the motive in the attack most likely was resentment.'
