India start with easiest Super Sixes opponent
March 04, 2003 03:41 IST
India start the second leg of their World Cup campaign on March 7 with what is expected to be their easiest game in the Super Sixes, when they clash with surprise qualifiers Kenya in a day/night encounter at Newlands, Cape Town.
The Indians then take on subcontinental neighbours Sri Lanka, who topped Group B after a tie under the Duckworth-Lewis rules with hosts South Africa in their last league match at Kingsmead, Durban, which was interrupted by rain.
The Indians will have a point or two to prove to the Lankans in this encounter on March 10 at the Wanderers, Johannesburg, after rain forced them to share the ICC Champions Trophy with the islanders in September last year.
Their third and final Super Sixes tie will also be something of a grudge match, as they take on the New Zealanders who had made life miserable for them on doctored pitches when India toured Kiwiland in December 2002-January 2003.
This game will take place on March 14 at the SuperSport Park, Centurion, where India, led by a swashbuckling Sachin Tendulkar, crushed Pakistan in a Group A tie on March 1.
In other Super Sixes games, Group A topper Australia will take on Sri Lanka at Centurion on March 7, followed by the Kiwis at Port Elizabeth on March 11 and Kenya at Durban on March 15.
The third qualifier from Group A will be decided only after the last game in the league on Tuesday, between Pakistan and Zimbabwe at Bulawayo. If Zimbabwe win the match, they will go through to the Super Sixes. If Pakistan win, however, England may qualify, because all three sides will be tied on points and the net run rate will come into play. To have an outside chance of qualifying, Pakistan will have to crush Zimbabwe by a huge margin.
