US army chief may visit Kashmir

Josy Joseph in New Delhi | January 31, 2003 18:15 IST

Chief of the United States Army General Eric K Shinseki, who is visiting India next week, will be briefed about the situation along India's borders with Pakistan and China.

General Shinseki, a Vietnam war veteran, will be in India from February 2 to 4.

According to sources in the Ministry of Defence, the army has organised an extensive briefing for General Shinseki on the situation along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh.

He will also be briefed on infiltration from across the LoC in J&K.

Sources said General Shinseki was expected to tour the LoC in J&K and India's border with China, but there was no official confirmation of this.

General Shinseki won't be the first high-ranking US dignitary to visit India's borders with Pakistan and China. US Ambassador Robert D Blackwill and Commander-in-Chief of US Pacific Command, Admiral Thomas Fargo, were in Kashmir recently.

General Shinseki is scheduled to meet the three services chief, besides calling on Defence Minister George Fernandes and Defence Secretary Subir Dutta.

Sub: US Army chief to LOC

The only solution to Kashmir problem is converting LOC to a border. The first step to achieve this is to make UN troops supervise LOC
